Langstaff, Richmond Hill

Langstaff is a well-connected neighbourhood in south Richmond Hill, combining established residential streets, newer condominiums, schools and community facilities with convenient access to Yonge Street, Highway 7, Highway 407 and regional transit.

For homebuyers, one of the most important things to understand about Langstaff is that it contains very different types of real estate within the same neighbourhood. The quieter residential streets around Red Maple Road and Bantry Avenue feel distinctly suburban, while the area approaching Yonge Street and Richmond Hill Centre is becoming increasingly urban and transit-oriented.

Where Is Langstaff?

Langstaff sits in southern Richmond Hill, immediately north of Highway 7 and the Highway 407 corridor.

The neighbourhood is closely connected to Yonge Street, Bayview Avenue, Langstaff Road, High Tech Road and Red Maple Road, putting residents within a relatively short distance of both major highways and transit.

For buyers, the specific pocket matters. Proximity to the railway, Highway 7, Yonge Street and future development can have a meaningful impact on noise, walkability, views and the overall character of a property.

Transit & Getting Around

Transit is one of Langstaff's biggest advantages.

Langstaff GO Station provides access to the Richmond Hill GO line, while Richmond Hill Centre connects residents to YRT and Viva services. Highway 7, Highway 407 and Highway 404 also make the neighbourhood particularly convenient for households commuting by car in different directions across the GTA.

The transit story is also changing significantly.

Future TTC Subway

The Yonge North Subway Extension will extend TTC Line 1 approximately eight kilometres north from Finch. The future Bridge Station is planned between Highway 7 and Highway 407 and will connect directly with Langstaff GO, GO buses and York Region Transit.

Early construction is already underway on the subway extension, and work at Langstaff GO is preparing the area for the future transit hub.

Buyer Tip: The future subway is an important long-term advantage, but proximity matters. Buyers should also consider future construction, development intensity and railway/transit noise when evaluating individual properties.

Schools in Langstaff

One of Langstaff's more interesting family features is the Langstaff Discovery Centre on Red Maple Road.

The shared complex brings together Red Maple Public School, Pope John Paul II Catholic School and Langstaff Community Centre, with the two schools sharing playground facilities.

Buying With a School in Mind: School boundaries and program eligibility can vary by property address and change over time. Buyers purchasing specifically for access to a school should verify the address with the appropriate school board before making a purchase decision.

Parks & Recreation

Dr. James Langstaff Community Park

A centrally located community park offering a grass soccer field, basketball courts, playground, splash pad, shade shelter and on-site parking, making it particularly useful for families and outdoor recreation.

The park sits within the residential portion of Langstaff, giving nearby residents convenient access to green space and recreation while remaining close to the neighbourhood’s schools and community facilities.

Amenities:

Soccer Field · Basketball Courts · Playground · Splash Pad · Shade Shelter · Parking

Tennis at Blackmore Tennis Club

Located at David Hamilton Park, Blackmore Tennis Club is a year-round tennis facility just north of Langstaff, with 6 hard courts and LED lighting. The courts operate outdoors from May through September and under an indoor tennis bubble from October through April. Open for junior and adult lessons, camps, house leagues, round robins and competitive play, making it a particularly useful nearby amenity for families and regular tennis players.

Local Tip: Membership can be difficult to secure — both the 2026 outdoor season and 2026/27 fall/winter season are currently sold out. If tennis is important to your lifestyle, it’s worth checking membership availability early.

Homes in Langstaff

Langstaff has a much newer housing profile than many established Toronto neighbourhoods, with much of its residential development occurring from the late 1990s onward.

The neighbourhood combines detached and semi-detached homes, freehold townhouses, and high-rise condominiums. Freehold streets are characterized by brick exteriors, attached garages, two-storey layouts, front porches, and traditional pitched rooflines.

Compared with Toronto's older housing stock, buyers can generally expect more modern floor plans, larger principal rooms, attached garages, and more open living spaces.

Homes & Lot Sizes

Langstaff's freehold housing is primarily made up of townhomes, semi-detached/linked homes and detached houses, with lot sizes varying by pocket and development.

  • Freehold Townhomes: Commonly around 20–25 ft wide, with depths often around 85–110+ ft. Most offer 3 bedrooms, a garage and private backyard. Some newer or premium properties have substantially deeper lots.
  • Semi-Detached / Linked Homes: Generally offer more frontage and interior width than a typical townhouse, often with an attached garage and larger backyard. Some homes that appear detached may actually be linked below grade, so the legal property type is worth confirming.
  • Detached Homes: Expect a wider range of lots, with many family homes offering 30–40+ ft frontage. Larger examples can reach approximately 40 × 110 ft, providing room for double garages, wider floor plans and larger yards.

Buyer Tip: Don't compare Langstaff homes based on square footage alone. Lot frontage, depth, garage configuration and whether the property is truly detached, linked or attached can materially affect both usability and value

Condominiums

Closer to Yonge Street and Richmond Hill Centre, Langstaff becomes considerably denser, with high-rise condominiums and condo townhouses concentrated around Oneida Crescent, Red Maple Road and the Yonge Street corridor.

Condo townhouses offer a middle ground between apartment living and freehold ownership, often providing multi-level layouts, private entrances and more residential-style living.

For condo buyers, I’d look beyond price per square foot and compare maintenance fees, parking and locker ownership, reserve-fund health, building age, and exposure to future development.

The Future of Langstaff

The City describes Richmond Hill Centre around Yonge and Highway 7 as its future downtown and integrated transit hub. Its Secondary Plan is now in effect and envisions substantially more residential and commercial development, public spaces, walkable streets and transit-oriented development.

The area around Bridge Station is specifically planned as an intermodal hub connecting the subway, GO rail, regional buses and the future Highway 407 Transitway.

For buyers, that creates both an opportunity and a consideration: improved transit and amenities over time, but also years of construction and a significantly more urban environment around Richmond Hill Centre.
